Local Spotlight - City of Minneapolis Arts & Culture Vibrant Storefronts Initiative

The Vibrant Storefronts Initiative is an innovative City of Minneapolis program that positively impacts vacant properties and allows for incubation space for local artists by connecting them to property owners. Thereby, activating empty storefront spaces while also supporting the creative community and bringing new energy and activity to key areas of the city. 

The program yields a dual purpose by ensuring stable tenants for property owners and furnishing space for local creative initiatives.  Participants in the program are expected to host quarterly programs to increase their audience and bring people into their places.

The program works to: 

• Support local artists, and arts organizations find space to workshop, develop, and share their programs and creative work with the public. 

• Provide public financial support, advocacy, and community building for local artists and arts organizations. 

• Increase arts activity, foot traffic, and public participation by supporting and encouraging creative placemaking in high‑impact locations. 

• Support local artists, and arts organizations find space to workshop, develop, and share their programs and creative work with the public. 

• Address the ongoing lack of affordable creative space in Minneapolis while helping improve the sense of public safety in commercial areas.
