Local Spotlight: Autonomous Vehicles in the Twin Cities
While driving around the City of Minneapolis, you may have seen Waymo vehicles. Waymo, a company that operates autonomous, driverless vehicles in other parts of the US, is currently testing its fleet on Minneapolis streets. They plan to continue through the winter. The vehicles currently have a human monitor in the driver’s seat. Eventually, the vehicles will no longer include any human drivers.
As Waymo's testing continues, members of the Minneapolis City Council are proposing an ordinance that would require a licensed human driver. Drivers for other ride-sharing companies are concerned about increased competition. Several City Council members proposed the new regulations. Under the proposed ordinance, the person in the car would need to be paid minimum wage. Autonomous vehicle companies would also need to obtain a license to operate in the city. If the ordinance passes, it will take effect in October 2027, giving the City Council time to adjust the rules as more information becomes available. The City Council is awaiting a report from city staff on autonomous vehicles and road safety to allow for further review.
